Bryan Smith

Mine Development and Blasting Manager, Luck Stone

Bryan received an MS Degree in Mining Engineering from Virginia Tech in 1979 and accepted a Management Trainee role with Luck Stone Corporation upon graduation.  He was the first VT Mining Engineering graduate to go directly into aggregates.

During a 40-year career, he has served Luck Stone in a variety of roles including, Plant Foreman, General Foreman, Plant Manager, Area Manager (two Regions of the Company), Chief Mining Engineer and Director of Engineering.  His current position is Mine Development and Blasting Manager.

Bryan enjoys helping others find success in life, particularly people who pursue mining and engineering.  A long-time member and past Chairman of the Goochland County Career and Technical Advisory Committee, he has served on the Virginia Transportation and Construction Alliance Operations Committee for over 30 years, including numerous years as Chairman.

In 1995 he began a Co-Op Program for Mining Engineering students.  More than 30 students have “graduated” from the Luck Stone program.

Bryan has shared his experiences by making presentations during Caterpillar Quarry Days, the World Mining Equipment Drilling & Blasting seminar, and to the Society of Mining Engineers, to the Virginia Transportation and Construction Alliance, the Virginia Association of Science Teachers Annual Convention, the North Carolina Mine Safety & Health Conference, the International Society of Explosive Engineers, the ISEE Potomac Chapter, and the Penn State Drilling and Blasting Conference.  Once he even spoke to the University of Virginia ROTC Class.  Bryan finds the most fun in sharing with Virginia Tech Mining students, whether the topics are mining, blasting, the Legend of Saint Barbara (the patron Saint of miners), or leadership.

Bryan has promoted technology in mining and strives to ensure successful applications.  He is committed to helping communities see the positives in aggregate mining and gaining the approval to begin new operations.  In short, he loves to see the distant visions become a reality!
