Who We Are
Mining Engineering has a long, rich tradition at Virginia Tech. In fact, the first engineering degree awarded by the university was the degree of "mining engineer" in 1885.
Since that time, Virginia Tech's program has become widely recognized for both its undergraduate and graduate programs, as well as a large body of research contributions. Our undergraduates are highly sought after throughout the industry, and comprise almost 20 percent of the engineers serving the field nationally.
Hokie mining engineers have pursued careers in a wide range of specialties, including geological exploration, mineral economics, metallurgy, processing, facility engineering and design, and environmental development. As one of the most hands-on of all the engineering fields, our graduates find themselves working outdoors, with opportunities to work in exciting locations around the globe.
