Department of Mining & Minerals Engineering

MinE Job Placement Program

Virginia Tech's Mining & Minerals Engineering program has one of the highest job placement rates at the university. A large part of this success is the result of the department’s extensive job placement and careers program.

Recruiter Visits

Throughout the academic year, recruiters from mining and minerals engineering companies visit the department to interview directly with VT's MinE students. Recruiters hire for full-time permanent positions as well as summer jobs, internships and co-ops.

Early in the fall semester students are required to submit a professional resume which is distributed to visiting recruiters. This allows recruiters to get to know job candidates in advance and also lets students express their career and summer job desires.

Online Interview Signup: "Mining Interviews"

To interview with a company, students must register online at the department's "Mining Interviews" Interview Schedule and Signup site. Here students can view ucpcoming recruiter interview dates, info session dates and locations, and sign up for interviews.

Non-Visiting Recruiters

Each semester there are a number of companies interested in hiring mining engineering students but are unable to interview at the department. Like the visiting recruiters, these companies receive copies of our students’ resumes.

Learning about Recruiter Companies

To be successful in the hiring process, it is important to have some basic knowledge about the employer and the company which you would like to work for. One way to do this is to attend the info sessions given by recruiters, usually on the day prior to the interviews. Another way is to research individual companies. Links to interviewing companies can be found on our Sponsors page.

Job Placement & Resume Writing Information Session

Early in the fall semester the department holds a Career Placement and Resume Writing information session for undergraduates. The presentation addresses students' basic questions regarding both permanent and summer positions in the mining industry, the recruiting process, and covers skills on writing resumes and preparing for interviews. Handouts of the current year's info session are available below*.
