Karmis Receives AIME Presidential Citation Award

Dr. Michael Karmis, Stonie Barker Professor in Virginia Tech’s Department of Mining and Minerals Engineering and Director of the Virginia Center for Coal and Energy Research (VCCER), is the recipient of the American Institute of Mining, Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers (AIME) Presidential Citation Award for his dedicated service as AIME President and United Engineering Foundation Trustee. The award further recognizes Karmis for his commitment to the ideals and traditions of the institute by promoting the advancement of collaborative efforts in cross-cutting areas, such as sustainability and government relations.

The AIME Presidential Citation Award was established in 2012 to recognize extraordinary and dedicated service in the furtherance of the society’s goals, purposes and traditions. Dr. Michael Karmis is recognized for his expertise in the areas of rock mechanics, health and safety, carbon sequestration and the sustainable development of energy and mineral resources. He has written more than 150 scientific papers, reports, proceedings volumes and textbooks. He has directed 45 major research projects and has been recognized as an outstanding teacher, earning numerous certificates of teaching excellence and other teaching commendations.

Karmis actively consults with the minerals industry, consulting companies, government organizations and legal firms. He served as the 2002 president of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration (SME) and as the 2009 president of AIME. He was elected as the 2002 president of the Society of Mining Professors and has served as its secretary general since 2005. Karmis is a Distinguished Member of SME, an Honorary Member of AIME, a Fellow of the Institute of Quarrying and a Fellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining. He has received numerous recognitions and awards by major scientific, professional and industrial organizations.
