Assistant Professor Position

The Department of Mining & Minerals Engineering at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) invites nominations and applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level. The successful candidate for the position is expected to develop an internationally recognized and externally funded research program in the broad area of “energy, materials and the environment” as it relates to the mining/minerals industry. Faculty members at Virginia Tech are expected to develop and maintain a nationally recognized funded research program; teach and advise undergraduate and graduate students in mining and minerals engineering; and contribute quality service and outreach to the department, college, university and profession. Occasional travel is required to attend professional conferences and meetings.

A Ph.D. in mining engineering, metallurgical engineering, mineral processing, materials engineering, geological engineering, geology, reservoir engineering, petroleum engineering, civil (geotechnical) engineering, or closely related field is required. All candidates are encouraged to have, or seek upon employment, professional engineering registration.  The search is open to ‘All But Dissertation’ (ABD) applicants; however, the appointment is contingent upon completion of all doctoral requirements by the beginning date of appointment.

The Mining & Minerals Engineering Department at Virginia Tech is one of the largest minerals and coal-related engineering programs in North America. The Department currently enjoys a strong international reputation for its excellent academic, research and outreach programs. The Department is currently comprised of 8 full-time faculty members, with an enrollment of more than 170 undergraduate and 40 graduate students. Research expenditures in the Department are in excess of $4.7 million per year. The Department is housed within a nationally ranked College of Engineering at Virginia Tech. Virginia Tech, the land-grant University of the Commonwealth, is located in Blacksburg, Virginia, adjacent to the scenic Blue Ridge Mountains. The university has a total enrollment of more than 30,000, with 7,000 students enrolled within the College of Engineering.
