Students explore role of sustainability and sound mining practices during field trip to Wise County, Virginia

Over 40 students attended a field trip in Wise County, Virginia, as part of their senior level Mine Engineering and Environmental Management class. The trip was led by Kyle Louk, graduate student instructor for the course.

During the trip, students visited with the Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals, and Energy (DMME) to learn about permitting and reclamation. They also visited Red River Coal Company to tour its waste impoundment and active operations. Finally, students had the opportunity to tour the Powell River Project, a Virginia Tech-led project aimed at providing research on education on the implementation of sound mine reclamation and environmental practices.
